Instrument Cluster (IC)

Instrument Cluster (IC)

NOTE: Base Instrument Cluster (IC) shown, other clusters are similar.

NOTE: The Smart Junction Box (SJB) is also known as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).

The Instrument Cluster (IC) is available with an integrated Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) (base IC) or with a message center (high series IC). Both the base IC and the message center IC contain gauges, indicator lamps, and warning lamps that are designed to provide the driver with a system status and to alert the driver that certain conditions exist in the vehicle. The IC lens and mask assembly, and some of the indicator bulbs are the only parts that may be installed separately.

Gauges

Gauges provide information to the driver indicating the status of systems. The system that use gauges are as follows:

- Engine coolant temperature
- Engine rpm
- Fuel level
- Vehicle speed

Informational Indicators

Informational indicators provide information to the driver of conditions that exist in the vehicle. The informational indicators are grouped into the following system/subsystems:

- Engine/powertrain control
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
- Powertrain malfunction (wrench)
- Transmission (overdrive)
- Evaporative emission system

- Lighting
- High beam
- Turn signal

- Vehicle control
- Speed control
- Traction control
- 4WD control

Warning Indicators

Warning indicator lamps provide information to the driver of conditions that could potentially alter vehicle performance. The warning indicators are grouped into the following system/subsystem:

- Engine/powertrain control
- Charging system
- Low engine oil pressure
- Engine over-temperature

- Occupant/drive safety
- Door ajar
- Safety belt
- Low Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
- Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) (air bag)

- Vehicle control
- ABS
- Brake system

Hardwired Inputs

The hardwired inputs are provided from the following systems or components:

- Engine oil pressure switch
- Fuel level
- Message center switch
- Compass
- Washer fluid level
- Outside air temperature

Network Message Inputs

Module messaging is becoming the standard for sending and receiving information required to operate the IC. For a complete list of module messages with the message origination sources, refer to Information Bus.

The status and information message that the IC requires from other vehicle inputs are grouped into the following systems/subsystems:

- ABS
- Anti-lock braking
- Traction control

- Base brake system
- Brake fluid level status
- Parking brake status

- Lighting system
- LH/RH turn
- High beam

- Powertrain
- Charging
- Engine rpm
- Overdrive (O/D) off
- Engine temperature
- Evaporative emission system
- Vehicle speed
- SRS
- TPMS
- 4WD control
