Pinpoint Test AK: The Chime Sounds When The Driver Door Is Ajar (No Key In Ignition And Headlamps Off)

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 60, Instrument Cluster for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

When the key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder, the key-in-ignition switch (part of the ignition switch) closes, providing a voltage signal to the Instrument Cluster (IC) through circuit CDC30 (BU/GY). The door ajar status is communicated to the IC from the Smart Junction Box (SJB) through the controller area network (CAN). If the IC detects that the ignition switch is in the OFF or ACC position, the key is inserted in the ignition lock cylinder, and the SJB communicates to the IC that the driver door is ajar, the key-in-ignition warning chime sounds. The SJB communicates to the IC that the headlamps or parking lamps are on and the driver door is opened. The headlamps on warning chime sounds when the driver door is opened with the ignition switch in the OFF position, the key is not in the ignition lock cylinder, and the headlamp switch is in the HEADLAMP or PARKING LAMP position.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Key-in-ignition warning switch (part of the ignition switch)
- IC

PINPOINT TEST AK: THE CHIME SOUNDS WHEN THE DRIVER DOOR IS AJAR (NO KEY IN IGNITION AND HEADLAMPS OFF)

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

-------------------------------------------------
AK1 CHECK THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS FOR OPERATION

- Turn the headlamp switch to the OFF position.
- Are the headlamps or parking lamps illuminated?

Yes
REFER to Lighting and Horns. Lighting and Horns

No
GO to AK2.

-------------------------------------------------
AK2 CHECK CIRCUIT CDC30 (BU/GY) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

- Ignition OFF.
- Remove the key from the ignition lock cylinder.
- Disconnect: IC C220.
- Measure the voltage between the IC C220-14, circuit CDC30 (BU/GY), harness side and ground.

- Is any voltage present?

Yes
GO to AK3.

No
GO to AK4.

-------------------------------------------------
AK3 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH

- Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250.
- Measure the voltage between the IC C220-14, circuit CDC30 (BU/GY), harness side and ground.

- Is any voltage present?

Yes
REPAIR circuit CDC30 (BU/GY) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
INSTALL a new ignition switch. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
AK4 CHECK FOR CORRECT IC OPERATION

- Disconnect the IC connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the IC connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
