Pinpoint Test E: The Ignition Key Cannot Be Removed from the Ignition Lock Cylinder

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 13, Power Distribution/SJB for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

When the transmission selector lever is placed in a position other than PARK, the key release interlock actuator (part of the ignition switch assembly) prevents the key from being removed from the ignition lock cylinder. The key release interlock actuator receives fused battery voltage from Smart Junction Box (SJB) fuse 8 (15A) along circuit SBP08 (VT/RD). Ground for the solenoid is provided along circuit CDC41 (WH/BN), through the park detection switch (internal to the transmission selector lever) and then along circuit GD138 (BK/WH). When the transmission selector lever is placed in a position other than PARK, the park detection switch applies ground to circuit CDC41 (WH/BN). This prevents the key from being removed from the ignition lock cylinder.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Ignition switch
- Transmission selector lever

PINPOINT TEST E: THE IGNITION KEY CANNOT BE REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER

NOTICE: Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.

-------------------------------------------------
E1 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION SELECTOR LEVER

- Ignition ON.
- Apply the brake pedal.
- Move the transmission selector lever from PARK, through all ranges and back to PARK.
- Can the transmission selector lever be moved freely into and out of the PARK position?

Yes
GO to E2.

No
REFER to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle to diagnose the automatic transmission external controls. Testing and Inspection

-------------------------------------------------
E2 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH

- Carry out the Ignition Switch Mechanical Check. Component Tests and General Diagnostics
- Is the ignition switch and ignition lock cylinder OK?

Yes
GO to E3.

No
INSTALL a new ignition switch or ignition lock cylinder as necessary.

For new ignition switch, REFER to Ignition Switch Ignition Switch.

For new ignition lock cylinder, REFER to Locks.

-------------------------------------------------
E3 CHECK THE PARK DETECTION SWITCH

- Place the transmission selector lever in the PARK position.
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Transmission Selector Lever C2008.
- Can the ignition key be removed from the ignition lock cylinder?

Yes
INSTALL a new transmission selector lever. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to E4.

-------------------------------------------------
E4 CHECK CIRCUIT CDC41 (WH/BN) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

- Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250.
- Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-3, circuit CDC41 (WH/BN), harness side and ground.

- Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

Yes
INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to Ignition Switch Ignition Switch. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
REPAIR circuit CDC41 (WH/BN). TEST the system for normal operation.
