TFI Ignition Module - Diagnostic Procedure

Subject:
TFI Diagnosis Procedure

FORD
1982 Escort, EXP With T.F.I. Ignition Module

LINCOLN-MERCURY
1982 Lynx, LN7 With T.F.l. Ignition Module

The start circuit operation of the Thick Film Ignition (T.F.I.) system (used in 1982 vehicles) is different than the "start" circuit operation of the DURASPARK Ignition system. During engine cranking, the T.F.I system will not begin producing sparks unless battery voltage is applied to the "start" pin of the ignition module. When the ignition switch is put into the "start" position, this voltage is simultaneously supplied to both the ignition module and the starter relay on circuit #32 (red wire with blue stripe). Unlike the starter motor solenoid, the ignition module "start" voltage is not supplied by the starter relay. If it is suspected that the T.F.l. system is not producing sparks, verify that the ignition module start line has a voltage present during engine cranking. Refer to Page 94 in the 1982 Electrical Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual for complete ignition circuit information.
