Ignition - Ignition Timing Inspection Procedure

83ford17 Article No. 83-19-3

IGNITION - INITIAL TIMING 1.6L - 2.3L - 2.3L H.S.C. - 2.8L - ENGINE WITH EEC IV - SERVICE TIP

FORD 1983 ESCORT, EXP, T-BIRD; 1984 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 LYNX, LN7, COUGAR; 1984 TOPAZ

LIGHT TRUCKS 1983 BRONCO

CALIBRATIONS: ALL ENGINES WITH EEC-IV

When checking initial spark timing on engines with EEC IV systems, it is necessary to open the spout (324) circuit by disconnecting the wire at the in-line connector. The connector is located between the distributor and engine harness take-out.

An induction-type timing light can then be used to observe the timing marks in the usual way. Actual spark timing should be checked with engine conditions as specified on the emission decal.

The 324 wire must be reconnected after the timing has been checked.
