MEDIUM/HEAVY TRUCK: 1987-88 CL, L SERIES

ISSUE: AM/FM stereo and AM/FM stereo cassette electronic search radios (ESR) require the use of special tools (T87P- 19A061-A) to remove the radio from the instrument panel. The new design radios are fastened to the instrument panel with retaining springs on the sides of the radio chassis.

ACTION: To remove the radio, use special tools T87P-19A061-A and the following service procedure.

NOTE: 1987 Mustangs built prior to 01/01/87 have an additional bond strap attached to the radio chassis and clipped to the console bracket, Figure 5. If the radio is being replaced, the bond strap must be transferred to the new radio.

1. Remove radio finish panel (not required for Mustang).

2. Modify removal tools (T87P-19A061-A) by wrapping tape around them to prevent the tools from being inserted too far, Figure 2.

3. Insert tools into bezel holes until slight resistance is felt about 9/16" (14 mm), Figure 3.

4. Continue to insert tools up to tape wrap about 7/8" (23 mm).

5. Pull tools rearward to remove radio, Figure 4.

6. Disconnect the electrical connectors and antenna lead.

NOTE: If face plate, or retaining springs, are damaged during radio removal, return radio to your authorized FERCO station for repair.
