Distributor: Service and Repair

Distributor (Typical) - Exploded View:

Removal
1. Disconnect primary wire connector from distributor.
2. Using a screwdriver, remove distributor cap and position aside with wires attached. Before removing distributor cap, mark position of No. 1 tower on distributor base for assembly reference.
3. Remove distributor rotor, then disconnect ignition module electrical connector.
4. Remove distributor hold-down bolt(s) and clamp, and the distributor. Some models use special distributor hold-down bolts. To remove these bolts, use tool No. T82L-12270-A or equivalent.
Installation
1. Rotate engine until No. 1 piston is on compression stroke.
2. Align timing marks for correct initial timing.
3. Rotate distributor shaft until center rod on rotor is pointing toward mark made on distributor base during removal. Continue to rotate shaft slightly until leading edge of vane is centered in vane switch stator assembly.
4. Rotate distributor in block until leading edge and vane stator switch assembly are aligned, and rotor is pointing to No. 1 cap terminal. If vane and switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in block, slide distributor out of block just enough to disengage distributor gear. Rotate distributor shaft to engage a different gear tooth, then repeat steps 1 through 4 as needed.
5. Install distributor clamp and hold-down bolt. Do not tighten bolt at this time.
6. Connect distributor to wiring harness.
7. Install distributor cap, rotor and ignition wires. Ensure ignition wires are attached securely to distributor cap and spark plugs.
8. Torque distributor attaching screws to 18---23 inch lbs. and the rotor screws to 23---35 inch lbs.
9. Adjust ignition timing to specifications.
10. Torque distributor hold-down bolt to 17---25 ft. lbs.
