ISSUE: A musty odor from the air conditioner and heater system is often caused by a mold or fungal growth in the air conditioning evaporator. This odor is most noticeable when the air conditioning (A/C) system is first turned on. This condition has been experienced throughout the industry on many different vehicle lines because by its function most air conditioning systems provide the necessary environment to support mold and fungal growth.

ACTION: To correct this, odors from mold and fungal growth can be reduced with the proper application of the chemicals contained in a special service kit. There are three steps to the procedure.

1. Apply disinfectant

2. Dry the A/C system, and

3. Apply mold inhibitor

The Dirkes spray unit, Figure 1, must be used to make sure the chemicals enter the blower assembly and saturate the evaporator core. This is the area where the chemicals are needed most.
