Engine: Service and Repair

Because of engine compartment tolerances, engine should not be removed or installed with transmission attached.
1. Disconnect battery and alternator ground cables.
2. Drain cooling system and crankcase.
3. Mark position of hinges and remove hood.
4. Remove air cleaner and intake duct assembly.
5. Disconnect radiator hoses from engine.
6. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect transmission oil cooler lines from radiator.
7. Remove fan shroud attaching bolts, then the radiator, fan, spacer, pulley and shroud.
8. Remove alternator mounting bolts and position alternator aside.
9. Disconnect oil pressure sending unit electrical connector.
10. Relieve fuel pressure, then disconnect fuel tank line at fuel pump and plug line.
11. Disconnect accelerator cable and speed control cable, if equipped, from carburetor or throttle body.
12. Disconnect throttle valve vacuum line from intake manifold, if equipped.
13. Disconnect manual shift rod and retracting spring at shift rod stud.
14. Disconnect transmission filler tube bracket from engine block.
15. Isolate and remove A/C compressor from vehicle, if equipped.
16. Disconnect power steering pump bracket from cylinder head and water pump and position aside, if equipped.
17. Disconnect power brake vacuum line from intake manifold, if equipped.
18. Disconnect heater hoses from engine.
19. Disconnect coolant temperature sending unit electrical connector.
20. Remove upper flywheel housing to engine attaching bolts.
21. Disconnect ignition coil and distributor wiring. Remove harness from left hand rocker arm cover and position aside. Disconnect ground strap from engine block.
22. Raise and support front of vehicle.
23. Disconnect starter motor wiring and remove starter motor.
24. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifold.
25. Disconnect engine mounts from frame brackets.
26. Disconnect secondary air line to catalytic converter, if equipped.
27. If equipped with manual transmission, remove bolts attaching clutch equalizer bar to frame rail, then the equalizer from engine block. Remove remaining flywheel housing to engine bolts.
28. On models with automatic transmission, detach transmission oil cooler lines from retainer. Remove converter housing inspection cover, then remove converter to flywheel attaching bolts. Secure converter in housing. Remove remaining converter housing to engine bolts.
29. Lower vehicle and support transmission. Attach suitable engine lifting equipment to engine.
30. Raise engine slightly and pull forward to disengage from transmission.
31. Remove engine from vehicle.
32. Reverse procedure to install.
