Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Flow of Diagnosis

Flow of Diagnosis:

1. Verify customer complaint by getting complete description from customer of when and where the problem occurs. Road test if necessary.
2. Perform underhood inspection:
a. Visually inspect all wiring and components for evidence of loose connections, overheating, shorting, or any other damage.
b. Check that spark plug wires are routed properly, are seated properly, (on the plugs and on the distributor) and are connected in the correct firing order.
c. Check that the distributor cap is seated properly and is not damp or cracked.
d. Check that the coil is not damp or cracked.
e. Do all components appear to be OK?
f. Check that the rotor is turning smoothly while the engine is cranking (timing belt check).
3. Check TSB's for updated diagnostic procedures, warranty and recall information.
4. The Primary Circuit Test checks the ignition coil only. For further testing refer to Computers and Control Systems.
