Neutral Safety Switch: Service and Repair

1. Disarm airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Place shift indicator in ``Neutral'' position.
4. Remove air cleaner assembly.
5. Remove shift cable attaching nut, then disconnect cable, Fig. 2.
6. Remove neutral switch harness from metal retainer, then separate harness from sheathing.
7. Disconnect switch electrical connectors.
8. Remove switch attaching bolts, then remove switch.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure switch and shaft are in ``Neutral'' position.
b. Loosely install switch attaching bolts, then remove cover screw and align internal hole with cover screw hole.
c. Ensure alignment by inserting a .079 inch pin through opening.
d. Torque switch attaching screws to 69-95 inch lbs.
e. Remove alignment pin, then torque cover screw to 3-6 inch lbs.
f. Torque shift cable attaching nut to 33-47 ft lbs.
g. Reactivate airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
