Surge, Hesitation, Stall On Acceleration

Engine hesitates or stumbles on acceleration, sometimes stalling. This condition can occur at any speed, but primarily from a stop. Vehicle may also experience a surge or rise and fall of engine speed at cruise or steady throttle.


POSSIBLE CAUSE ACTION

EGR malfunction,
EGR valve plunger loose or sticking,
flange gasket leaking 1. Check EGR system.
If OK, proceed to step 2
2. Check EGR electronic controls.



Incorrect Spark Advance Check Spark Controls (SC).



Hot air tube not connected
to air cleaner, vacuum motor
inoperative, air damper
door binding or not opening Check the intake air temperature system.



Saturated fuel evaporative canister
or malfunctioning vapor purge system 1. Check Purge System Components.
If OK, go to step 2.
2. Check Evaporative System electronic controls.



Initial timing incorrect Check Ignition Timing.


Restricted exhaust Check Catalytic Converter.



Poor or contaminated fuel Recommend higher grade fuel
