Starting System: Description and Operation

Voltage is present at the Ignition Switch contacts and Starter Assembly contacts at all times.

With the Ignition Switch in START (and the Clutch Start Switch closed (manual transaxle) or the Manual Lever Position Switch in PARK or NEUTRAL (automatic transaxle), current flows through the Ignition Switch, the Clutch Start Switch or Manual Lever Position Switch, and the Starter Assembly to ground. The Starter Assembly Pull-in and Hold windings are energized and the Starter Assembly contacts close. Current now flows from the Battery to the Starter Assembly, and the Starter Motor runs to crank the engine.

On manual transaxle-equipped vehicles, circuit 5 (BK/DB) provides a "key-in-start" input to the Instrument Cluster; circuit 6 (B/K/R) energizes the Starter Assembly Pull-in and hold windings, providing a "cranking" signal to the EGI Control Module and the Van Air Flow Relay.

On automatic transaxle-equipped vehicles, circuit 5 (BK/DB) provides a "key-in-start" input to the 4EAT Control Module and the EGI Control Module: circuit 6 (BK/R) energizes the Starter Assembly Pull-in and Hold windings, providing a "cranking" signal to the instrument Cluster, the EGI Control Module and the Vane Air Flow Relay.
