Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Component Tests

R-134a systems require the use of special service equipment designed specifically for R-134a systems. R-12 servicing equipment cannot be used on R-134a systems.

1. Connect manifold gauge set to system.
2. Turn A/C system on and operate blower motor at high speed with engine running at 2000 RPM.
3. Open all windows and move recirc/fresh air lever to recirc position.
4. Position one thermometer in center console duct and another thermometer in blower inlet under righthand side of dash.
5. Allow A/C system to stabilize for 5-10 minutes, then note high pressure gauge reading which should be 199-220 psi. If necessary, attempt to raise excessively low pressure by covering the condenser or lower high pressure by spraying water through condenser. If pressure cannot be brought within specifications, record stabilized pressure and perform necessary system diagnosis.
