TRANSAXLE - AX4S AND AX4N - LOW TRANSAXLE FLUID LEVEL IMPROPERLY SETTING DIAGNOSTIC CODES: P1784, P1785, P0500 (OBD II) OR 452, 676, 677 (OBD I)

FORD:
1994-95 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1994-95 CONTINENTAL, SABLE

LIGHT TRUCK:
1995 WINDSTAR

ISSUE:
A low transmission fluid level may improperly set continuous memory DTC's for transmission concerns on some vehicles. These DTC's could be one or all of the following:

^ P0500, or 452 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
^ P1784, or 676 Transaxle mechanical concern - 1st/reverse
^ P1785, or 677 Transaxle mechanical concern - 1st/2nd

Setting of these codes may cause the following transmission symptoms:

^ P0500, 452 - Harsh engagements, firm shifts, early or late shift schedules, no torque converter engagement, Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated.
^ P1784, 676 - No 1st or reverse gears, 2nd gear start up, flashing Transmission Control Indicator Lamp (TCIL).
^ P1785, 677 - No 1st or 2nd gears, 3rd gear start up, flashing TCIL.

ACTION:
Perform On-Board diagnostics as listed in the Service Manual. Diagnose all DTC's as required. If continuous memory codes P0500, P1784 and P1785 or 452, 676 or 677 are present, perform the following diagnostic procedures.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

1. Check fluid level and add fluid, if necessary, per Service Manual procedures.
2. Clear all continuous DTC'S. Road test. Rerun self test.
3. If continuous DTC's P0500, P1784, P1785 (OBD II) or 452, 676 or 677 (OBD I) persist, refer to the following for diagnosis information:

^ P0500, 452 - Appropriate OBD Powertrain Control/Emission Diagnosis Manual.
^ P1784 and P1785 or 676 and 677 - Appropriate model year Service Manual under Diagnosis by Symptom Section.
