Water Pump: Service and Repair
Typical 4.6L Water Pump:
REMOVAL
1. Drain engine coolant, remove cooling fan motor/fan blade (8600) and fan shroud (8146) assembly.
2. Release drive belt tensioner (6B209) and remove accessory drive belt (8620). Refer to Engine.
3. Remove four bolts retaining water pump pulley (8509) to water pump (8501) and remove water pump pulley.
4. Remove four bolts retaining water pump to engine (6007) and remove water pump.
INSTALLATION
1. Replace O-ring type water pump housing gasket (8507) and clean sealing surface of cylinder block (6010).
2. Lubricate water pump housing gasket with Ford Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA (in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-8-B) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A.
3. Position water pump on engine and install four retaining bolts. Tighten to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lbs.).
4. Position water pump pulley on water pump and install four retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lbs.).
5. Install accessory drive belt.
6. Install cooling fan motor/fan blade, fan shroud assembly and fill coolant.
7. Check for leaks.
