Steering Column: Description and Operation
NOTE: All fasteners are important because they affect the performance of vital parts and systems. Their failure could result in major service expenses. They must be replaced with fasteners of the same part number if replacement becomes necessary. Do not use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during assembly to maintain proper functioning of these parts.DESCRIPTION
The steering column is:
^ of modular construction.
^ features easy-to-service electrical switches.
^ These vehicles are not equipped with a fixed steering column.
^ Tilt steering columns are equipped with a tilt mechanism that allows the steering wheel angle to be adjusted.
^ A tilt lever is located on the LH side of the steering column underneath the multi-function switch.
^ When the tilt lever is pulled toward the driver, the steering wheel can be adjusted to one of five angles.
^ When the tilt lever is released, the steering column is locked into position.
AIR BAG (SRS)
The steering column has a steering wheel which is bolted to the top of the steering column and is fitted with a supplemental air bag system.
^ Before performing work on or around any supplemental air bag system component, observe all supplemental air bag system conditions and warnings to avoid accidental air bag deployment and possible injury.
^ Refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts for supplemental air bag system conditions and warnings.
