Free Play

^ With the wheels in the straight ahead position, gently turn steering wheel the to the left and right to check free play. Free play should be between 0 and 30 mm (0 and 1.18 inches). If the free play exceeds this limit, either the steering joints are worn or the backlash of the power rack and pinion steering gear is excessive.
^ When checking steering wheel free play, also check for radial play or wobble between the steering wheel and steering column. Any free play detected reflects wear in the steering column bearings and can add to apparent free play.
