1. NOTE: The hydraulic lash adjusters must be installed in their original locations. Record hydraulic lash adjuster locations.

Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.

2. Using the special tool, compress the valve spring.

3. CAUTION: Keep the valves, valve seals, valve springs, valve retainers and valve spring retainer keys in order so they can be installed in the same position.

NOTE: Valve stem seals should be visually inspected if new seals are not installed.

Remove the valve spring retainer keys, the valve spring retainer, the valve spring, the valve and the valve stem seal.
4. Repeat the above steps and remove all of the valve spring retainer keys, valve spring retainers, valve springs, valves and valve stem seals.
5. Remove the bolt, the washer, the camshaft sprocket and the spacer.

6. NOTE: The camshaft bearing caps must be installed in their original location. Record camshaft bearing cap location.

Remove the bolts and the camshaft bearing caps.
7. Remove the camshaft.

8. Clean and inspect the camshaft bearing caps.
^ One of the bearing caps contains an oil flow restriction groove. Make sure the groove is free of foreign material.

Assembly

1. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.

Clean the sealing surfaces using a plastic scraping tool and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
2. Clean and inspect the valves, valve springs, valve guides, valve seats, camshafts and check the cylinder head for distortion.

3. Lubricate the camshaft journals with clean engine oil.
4. Lubricate the camshaft bearing caps with clean engine oil.

5. CAUTION: Make sure the camshaft sprocket keyway is up and 90 degrees from the valve cover mounting surface.

Install the camshaft and the camshaft bearing caps in their original locations.
^ Install the bolts finger tight.

6. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).

7. NOTE: Make sure the valve train does not rotate while tightening the bolt.

Position the spacer, the camshaft sprocket, the washer and the bolt. Tighten the bolt in 2 stages.
^ Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 2: Rotate an additional 90 degrees.

8. NOTE: Make sure that the garter spring is present in the valve stem seal.

NOTE: Lubricate the valve stems with clean engine oil.

Using the special tools, install new valve seals.

9. Install the special tool between the valve spring coils to protect the valve stem seal from damage.

10. NOTE: Lubricate all components with clean engine oil.

Install the valve. Using the special tool, install the valve spring, the spring retainer and the valve shrine retainer keys.
11. Repeat the above steps and install all of the remaining valves, valve stem seals, valve spring, spring retainer and the valve spring retainer keys.

12. NOTE: Lubricate the hydraulic lash adjusters with clean engine oil.

Install the hydraulic lash adjusters in their original locations.
