Tests AA: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

PINPOINT TEST AA: THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

Normal Operation
The powertrain malfunction (wrench) telltale can be turned on by one of four modules. The PCM provides the electronic throttle control status (Hybrid only) and transmission status (except Hybrid), the transmission control module (TCM) provides the transmission status (Hybrid only), the four wheel drive (4WD) control module provides the four wheel drive system status (except Hybrid) and the traction battery control module (TBCM) (Hybrid only) provides the traction battery system status to the instrument cluster. Each module monitors the powertrain for their respective function(s) and provides the instrument cluster with the operating status over the high speed controller area network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When a fault condition exists in any of the monitored systems, the PCM, TCM, 4WD control module or TBCM provides the instrument cluster with a message to turn on the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator.

If the electronic throttle control message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the instrument cluster for more than 5 seconds, the instrument cluster sets DTC U0100 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) reconfigurable telltale on.

NOTE: If U0100 is set in the instrument cluster other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or odometer.

If the transmission status message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the instrument cluster for more than 5 seconds, the instrument cluster sets DTC U0101 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) reconfigurable telltale on.

If the traction battery status message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the instrument cluster for more than 5 seconds, the instrument cluster sets DTC U0111 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) reconfigurable telltale on.

If the four wheel drive system status message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the instrument cluster for more than 5 seconds, the instrument cluster sets DTC U0114 in continuous memory and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) reconfigurable telltale on.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Electronic throttle concern
- Transmission concern
- Traction battery concern
- 4WD concern
- Instrument cluster
