5R55S - Automatic Transaxle/Transmission
Transmission - Rear Wheel Drive (RWD)1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms can occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. Notify the customer that they can experience slightly different upshifts (either soft or firm) and that this is a temporary condition and will eventually return to normal operating condition.
Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. Remove the coolant expansion tank bolts and position the tank aside.
4. Remove the fan shroud bolts. Do not remove the fan shroud.
5. If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.
^ Install the transmission fluid drain plug when finished.
6. Remove the 2 RH heat shield bolts and position the RH heat shield aside.
7. NOTE: LH side shown, RH side similar.
Disconnect the 2 heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connectors.
8. NOTE: LH side shown, RH side similar.
Disconnect the 2 catalyst monitor sensor electrical connectors.
9. Remove the LH exhaust heat shield bolt.
10. If equipped, remove the RH exhaust heat shield.
11. Remove the bolts, springs and flagnuts and separate the muffler from the converter.
^ Discard the gasket.
^ Discard the flagnuts.
12. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.
Remove the 4 converter-to-manifold nuts.
13. WARNING: Secure the assembly to the jack. Avoid any obstructions while lowering and raising the jack. Contact with obstructions may cause the assembly to fall off the jack, which may result in serious personal injury.
Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.
14. Remove the 4 RH side crossmember bolts and the nut.
15. Remove the 4 LH side crossmember bolts and the nut.
16. Remove the transmission support insulator nuts and remove the crossmember.
17. NOTE: This step may require an assistant. Remove the 3-way converter system.
18. Remove the selector lever cable shield by prying on the side of the selector lever cable shield closest to the boot, then sliding the selector lever cable shield away from the boot.
19. Remove the selector lever cable and selector lever cable bracket.
20. Remove the driveshaft.
21. Remove the ground cable nut and position the cable to the side.
22. Remove the starter and position aside.
23. NOTE: Make an identifying mark on the nut, stud and flexplate to allow for correct installation.
Remove and discard the 4 torque converter nuts.
24. Remove the lower transmission retaining bolts.
25. Lower the transmission to gain access to the sensor connectors and the transmission bolts.
26. Disconnect the RH catalyst monitor connector and the fuel lines from the bracket.
27. Disconnect the RH HO2S from the transmission.
28. Disconnect the LH HO2S and the harness clip from the transmission.
29. Disconnect the LH catalyst monitor connector from the transmission.
30. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor, output shaft speed (OSS) sensor and intermediate shaft speed sensor electrical connectors.
31. NOTE: Clean the area around the transmission solenoid body harness connector to prevent contamination of the transmission control solenoid body connector.
Remove the screw from the transmission control solenoid body harness connector and disconnect the transmission solenoid body harness connector.
32. Move the rubber boot back to gain access to the digital transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector.
33. Disconnect the digital TR sensor electrical connector.
34. Disconnect the harness retainers.
35. CAUTION: Do not damage the transmission fluid cooler tubes. Hold the transmission case fittings with a backup wrench.
Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes.
36. Remove the 6 engine-to-transmission retaining bolts and position the fuel line bracket aside.
37. Move the transmission back enough to install the special tool.
38. Lower the transmission from the vehicle.
39. Remove the special tool.
40. Carry out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning if the transmission is being overhauled or installing a new or remanufactured transmission.
