Pinpoint Test AP: The Safety Belt Warning Chime Does Not Operate Correctly/The Belt-Minder(R) Feature Does Not Operate Correctly
Normal Operation
The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the safety belt and Belt-Minder(R) requests from the Restraints Control Module (RCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). The safety belt warning chime sounds for approximately 6 seconds when the driver safety belt is not fastened and the ignition lock cylinder is turned from the OFF/LOCK or ACC to the ON or START position.
The Belt-Minder(R) feature supplements the safety belt warning function and is enabled after the safety belt warning is complete. The Belt-Minder(R) simultaneously sounds the chime and illuminates the safety belt warning lamp in the IC once the vehicle speed has exceeded 4.8 km/h (3 mph), and remains active for 5 minutes from the time it is started.
There are two Belt-Minder(R) strategies that are used and implemented by the IC as commanded by the RCM. The two strategies are designed to provide an increased intensity level of the chime. Belt-Minder(R) A provides 6 one-second sequences of 0.5-second on/0.5-second off for the first minute of the Belt-Minder(R) warning. Belt-Minder(R) B provides 6 one-second sequences of 0.2-second on/0.2-second off then 0.3-second on/0.3-second off for the remainder of the Belt-Minder(R) warning.
NOTE: Be sure that the safety belt/Belt-Minder(R) chime operation is verified with the vehicle moving at least 4.8 km/h (3 mph).
The Belt-Minder(R) functions exactly the same for both administrator and MyKey(TM) keys except that when a MyKey(TM) is in use, the driver cannot configure the Belt-Minder(R) off. Once the Belt-Minder(R) is activated, the Belt-Minder(R) continues to chime periodically (without the 5 minute time out) and the audio system is muted until the driver and passenger safety belts are fastened.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Belt-Minder(R) deactivated
- Safety belt warning indication concern
- Speedometer concern
- IC
PINPOINT TEST AP: THE SAFETY BELT WARNING CHIME IS INOPERATIVE/THE BELT-MINDER(R) FEATURE DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY
-------------------------------------------------
AP1 CHECK THE KEY-IN-IGNITION WARNING CHIME OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- With the ignition switch in the OFF position and the key in the ignition lock cylinder, open the LH front door and observe the key-in-ignition warning chime operation.
- Does the key-in-ignition warning chime operate correctly?
Yes
GO to AP2.
No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
AP2 CHECK THE SAFETY BELT WARNING INDICATOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Ignition ON.
- Within one minute, buckle then unbuckle the LH front safety belt.
- With the engine running, verify the safety belt warning indicator illuminates with the safety belt unbuckled and turns off when buckled.
- Does the safety belt warning indicator operate correctly?
Yes
GO to AP3.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test O. Pinpoint Test O: The Safety Belt Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
-------------------------------------------------
AP3 CHECK THE SPEEDOMETER OPERATION
- Drive the vehicle and verify that the speedometer is operating correctly.
- Does the speedometer operate correctly?
Yes
GO to AP4.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test E. Pinpoint Test E: The Speedometer Is Inoperative
-------------------------------------------------
AP4 CHECK THE BELT-MINDER(R) CONFIGURATION
NOTE: Verify that an administrator key is used for this test and not a MyKey(TM) programmed key. When a MyKey(TM) programmed key is used, the Belt-Minder(R) is automatically turned on and cannot be disabled (if previously disabled by an administrator, the Belt-Minder(R) remains disabled when an administrator key is used).
- Verify that the Belt-Minder(R) is activated or configured on for the seating position in question. Refer to Belt-Minder(R) Deactivating/Activating Service and Repair to configure without a scan tool.
- Is the Belt-Minder(R) activated for the seating position in question?
Yes
If the Belt-Minder(R) is always on above 4.8 km/h (3 mph) with the safety belt unfastened, the system is operating normally.
If the Belt-Minder(R) is always on with the safety belt fastened or never on with the safety belt unfastened above 4.8 km/h (3 mph), INSTALL a new RCM. REFER to Restraint Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
ACTIVATE the Belt-Minder(R) for the seating position in question. REFER to Belt-Minder(R) Deactivating/Activating Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation.
