Pinpoint Test G: The Family Entertainment System Is Inoperative/Does Not Operate Correctly
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 130, Audio System/Navigation for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 132, Video System for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number
Normal Operation
The Rear Entertainment Module (RETM) routes audio signals to the Audio Control Module (ACM). In single-play mode, the ACM plays the DVD audio on all speakers. In dual-play mode, the audio to the rear speakers is muted and the RETM continues to control the rear audio source to the headphones.
If the vehicle is equipped with the SYNC system, the audio signals from the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) are routed through the RETM to the ACM. This allows for single-play and dual-play to include SYNC system audio sources.
For vehicles without navigation, the satellite radio signals are also routed to the RETM after passing from the Satellite Digital Audio Receiver System (SDARS) module through the APIM.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Incorrect customer setting
- Damaged DVD
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- RETM
- ACM
PINPOINT TEST G: THE VIDEO SYSTEM IS INOPERATIVE/DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE: Before diagnosing the family entertainment system, make sure a known good DVD is installed.
-------------------------------------------------
G1 IDENTIFY THE SYMPTOM
- Operate the audio system in DVD single-play mode and observe the DVD audio. Refer to the Owner's Literature.
- Does the DVD audio operate correctly?
Yes
GO to G2.
No
If the vehicle is equipped with satellite audio (but not navigation) or the SYNC system, GO to G3.
Otherwise, GO to G4.
-------------------------------------------------
G2 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE DVD VIDEO
- Operate the audio system in DVD single-play mode and observe the DVD audio.
- Does the DVD video operate correctly?
Yes
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern was either caused by an incorrect system setting, or the customer using a damaged DVD. INFORM the customer that pressing the power button or the VIDEO button while a DVD is playing can cause the display to go blank.
No
GO to G6.
-------------------------------------------------
G3 CHECK THE RETM AUDIO PASS-THROUGH
NOTE: If the vehicle is equipped with both the SYNC system and satellite radio (but not navigation), either step 1 or step 2 can be followed.
- For vehicles equipped with the SYNC system, connect the Multi-Media Interface Tester, and operate the audio system in SYNC mode. Refer to the tool instructions.
- For vehicles equipped with satellite radio (but not navigation), operate the audio system in satellite radio mode
- Observe the audio output.
- Does the SYNC system (or satellite radio) audio operate correctly?
Yes
GO to G6.
No
GO to G4.
-------------------------------------------------
G4 CHECK THE AUDIO CIRCUITS TO THE ACM FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: RETM C9029.
- Disconnect: ACM C290b.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between the ACM, harness side and ground as follows:
- Is any voltage present?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to G5.
-------------------------------------------------
G5 CHECK THE AUDIO CIRCUITS TO THE ACM FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Measure the resistance between the ACM, harness side and the RETM, harness side; and between the ACM, harness side and ground as follows:
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the ACM and the RETM, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the ACM and ground?
Yes
GO to G6.
No
REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
G6 CHECK FOR LOST COMMUNICATION DTCs
- Using the scan tool, retrieve all continuous DTCs from all modules.
- Is DTC U0184, U0184:00, U0196, or DTC U0196:00 present in any module?
Yes
REFER to the DTC Charts. Diagnostic Trouble Code Tests and Associated Procedures
No
GO to G7.
-------------------------------------------------
G7 CHECK FOR CORRECT RETM OPERATION
- Connect: ACM C290b.
- Disconnect the RETM connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the RETM connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new RETM. REFER to Rear Entertainment Module (RETM) Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern remains, GO to G8.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
-------------------------------------------------
G8 CHECK FOR CORRECT ACM OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect all the ACM connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the ACM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new ACM. REFER to Audio Control Module (ACM) Audio Control Module (ACM). TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
