Intake Air Distribution and Filtering

Intake Air Distribution and Filtering

The air induction system consists of the following:

- Air Cleaner (ACL)
- ACL element
- ACL outlet pipe
- Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- Throttle Body (TB)

The air induction system supplies filtered air to the engine to mix with the fuel for combustion purposes.

The ACL provides a sealed container for the ACL element.

The ACL element is chemically treated, pleated paper which filters the engine intake air.

The ACL outlet pipe connects the ACL to the TB.

The MAF sensor is attached to the ACL and measures the volume of air delivered to the engine. The MAF sensor has an integrated Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor which measures the temperature of the incoming air. For information on servicing the MAF sensor, refer to Computers and Control Systems.

The TB varies the amount of air entering the engine based on driver input to the accelerator pedal. For information on servicing the TB, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction (4.0L SOHC engines) or Fuel Delivery and Air Induction (4.6L [3V] engines).
