SUBJECT
Clock Inaccurate

MODEL
R50 (Cooper), R52 (Convertible), R53 (Cooper S)

SITUATION

The clock is either losing or gaining time, with vehicles typically showing a deviation of several minutes a week. In addition, there are occasional cases where the clock resets by itself unable to adjust or stops counting.

No faults are stored in the Instrument Cluster.

CAUSE

Inaccurate calibration of the crystal frequency.

CORRECTION

In case of a customer complaint, run the diagnosis with DIS/GT1. If "Diagnosis" reveals no faults, then check that there are no volt drops in either the Instrument Cluster power supply or ground circuits. In addition, check the integrity of the Instrument Cluster wiring and connectors.

If no faults are found, then replace the center Instrument Cluster (IKE). Do not replace the steering column gauges.

To confirm that an improved replacement part is being installed, check the build date label on the front of the Instrument Cluster. For parts produced up to September 8, 2005, there is an additional "clock cal" sticker on the black plastic molding. For parts produced after September 8, 2005, all parts are improved parts.
