SUBJECT
Bowden Cable Inside Door Comes Loose

MODEL
R50 (Cooper)
R52 (Cooper Convertible and Cooper S Convertible)
R53 (Cooper S)

Produced up to 08/08/05.

SITUATION
Bowden cable on door may become loose causing door not to open from inside the vehicle.

CAUSE
The internal Bowden cable of the door latch assembly may not have been attached to the rotary striker properly, or has come loose.

PROCEDURE

Note:
It is not necessary to replace the Bowden cable or the latch assembly for this situation.

Remove the door panel per Repair Instructions RA 51 41 000 in order to gain access to the door latch assembly.

Release the Bowden cable (1) from the plastic housing
of the door latch assembly.
Wrap a piece of felt tape (2) around the plastic portion
of the Bowden cable (1) (one revolution only).
Doing this will increase the tightness between the
cable and the housing.

Insert the Bowden cable (1) back into the housing of
the door latch assembly.

Flip the cover open on the latch assembly to gain
access to the rotary striker (2).
Correctly position the Bowden cable (1) onto the
rotary striker (2).
Note:
The metal end of the cable (1) must be positioned as indicated by the arrow.

Do not fit the Bowden cable (1) in this position.
Note:
The metal end of the cable (1) appears to be positioned like an upside-down spoon.
