Clutch: Service and Repair
21 21 500 - Removing and installing/replacing clutch (W11, W17)
Special tools required:
- 11 8 460 11 8 460 Holder
- 21 2 210 21 2 210 Clutch Centering Tool
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove gearbox
To release pressure plate:
Grip central bolt on vibration damper or install special tool 11 8 460 11 8 460 Holder to block crankshaft belt pulley.
Slacken screws (1 ... 6).
Release all screws.
Remove pressure plate and clutch plate.
Installation:
Clean flywheel, check for wear and damage.
If necessary, replace flywheel.
Check clutch plate for damage and friction rust, replace if necessary.
Replace contaminated clutch plate (oil, cleaning agent etc.).
Note:
Direction marking GEARBOX SIDE (1) for transmission side of clutch plate.
Check clutch disk for wear.
Measure lining protrusion on transmission side.
Clutch plate must not be reinstalled if lining protrusion is ≤ 0.2 mm.
Measure opposite side of rivet head, as shown in (1).
Mount clutch plate on transmission input shaft and check for ease of movement.
Install pressure plate and clutch plate with special tool 21 2 210 21 2 210 Clutch Centering Tool.
Replace screws of pressure plate and tighten down in sequence (1-6).
Installation:
Before tightening down, check screw size and tightening torque.
Tightening torque 21 21 2AZ.
Tightening torque 21 21 3AZ.
Note:
While tightening pressure plate down, turn special tool 21 2 210 21 2 210 Clutch Centering Tool so that clutch plate is centered more easily.
