SUBJECT
Rattle from the Steering Column Area

MODEL
R56 (Cooper and Cooper S) produced up to 10/2007

SITUATION
A rattle may be heard from the steering column when driving over rough surfaces.

CAUSE
The steering column wiring harness and associated clip are not properly secured to the lower steering column trim cover.

CORRECTION
Properly secure the loose wiring harness and if necessary, identify any other points of contact which could cause the rattle.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the upper steering column trim per repair instruction RA 32 31 004.





2. Looking down from above the steering column, check if the wiring harness (1) is securely clipped to the rear tab (2) on the lower trim cover and re-secure it as necessary.

3. If the wiring harness is already securely fastened to the trim, attempt to pinpoint the source of the noise by reproducing it with the trim cover removed.

4. Address the contact points which have caused the noise, using felt tape.
