Technical Service

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Voluntary Emissions Recall 09E-A01: R55 and R56 N12 - Catalytic Converter Replacement

MODEL
R55 Cooper Clubman and R56 Cooper with N12 engine

Vehicles produced from the start of production up to February 11th, 2008

SITUATION

Due to a failure in the production process, the catalytic converter may deteriorate, causing an increased level of vehicle emissions. The catalyst efficiency fault code (276A) will be stored in the DME memory, and the Service Engine Soon lamp will be illuminated.

Vehicle drivability is not affected by this type of the catalyst failure.

In order to remedy this situation, MINI is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to inspect and replace the catalytic converter on all affected vehicles (if needed).

A copy of the customer letter is shown in this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Recall Campaign involves MY 2007 and a partial production of MY 2008 MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper Clubman vehicles with the N12 engine, which were manufactured from Series introduction up to 02/11/2008.

In order to determine whether a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The chassis number ranges shown above are only for informational purposes, and are not to be considered the only deciding factor.

PROCEDURE

On all affected vehicles, inspect and replace, if needed, the catalytic converter as per the procedure below.

1. In order to gain access to the exhaust manifold/catalytic converter, move the complete front end body panel into the assembly position (refer to RA41 33 600 for the removal instruction).

Note:
Use special tool P/N 83 30 0 495 888 (Cartool Part Number 002 270) to secure the front end into the assembly position. This tool was distributed to your dealership via the Automatic Tool Shipment Program (SI M04 01 07).

2. Remove the upper and lower catalyst heat shields.

3. Locate the catalyst part number and index number stamped on the catalyst body.

4. The last two digits after the part number represent the production index.

5. If the index is "06" (or higher), then the catalytic converter incorporates the latest production improvements and does NOT need to be replaced. Reinstall all previously removed parts.

6. If the index is "05" (or lower), then the catalytic converter needs to be replaced with the improved part (P/N 18 40 7 593 561), as per RA18 40 040.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

After the vehicle has been checked and corrected, obtain a label (MD20-062) and with a ballpoint pen, print your dealer code (5 digits) on the Recall Completion Label (see illustration). An initial quantity of 100 labels will be sent to all MINI dealers. Peel the label from its backing and affix it to the right (passenger) rear side of the hood in the engine compartment, close to the windshield.

For California centers only: It is required by the California Code of Regulations that an executed orange "Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction" certificate (SD92-084; see illustration) be provided to each customer (for vehicles registered in the state of California), once the Recall on his or her vehicle has been completed.

Note:
Additional labels can be ordered online at MINI TIS.
