Setting The Compass Display

Setting The Compass Display

1. Calibrating the compass

The digital compass must be calibrated manually on initial operation of the vehicle at the dealer and after replacing the interior mirror.
To calibrate the compass manually:
1. - Switch on ignition
2. Press the adjustment button until "C" (stands for calibration) appears.
3. Start the vehicle.
4. Drive around a circle 2 to 3 times at a maximum speed of 7 km/h until a direction is shown (calibration to the vehicle's own magnetic field). The circle must be at least double the vehicle's turning circle.

NOTE: Checking calibration.

The earth's magnetic field is deflected by tram lines, for example. If the deflection of the earth's magnetic field is severe, this leads to calibration faults. If the digital compass displays incorrect information, the calibration should be checked.

NOTE: Automatic calibration.

The system can also calibrate itself automatically. Here, a slightly changed magnetic field of the vehicle is balanced out automatically. If no adequate calibration can be carried out within 5 minutes, the compass switches to the mode for manual calibration "C". This occurs if the calibration value deviates significantly from the measured value of the magnetic field sensor (more than the earth's magnetic field, approx. 180 milligauss). After a number of circular trips or after cornering, the digital compass is functional once again.

2. Setting the magnetic field zone

The magnetic field zone for the compass can be set via diagnosis (see function check in the test sequence for the interior mirror) or manually.

To set the magnetic field zone manually:
1. Read the desired magnetic field zone from the map.
2. Switch on ignition.
3. Press the adjustment button until a number appears in the display.
4. Continue pressing the adjustment button to select the required magnetic field zone.
5. After a short time, the settings menu will automatically be exited. The menu may be called up again at any time.

The corresponding magnetic field zone must be selected from the graphic for the country concerned. There are 15 magnetic field zones worldwide.

NOTE: Switching to another magnetic field zone.

The display is not affected by a change to another magnetic field zone. 1 magnetic field zone means a deviation of 4.5°, e.g. journey from Germany to Portugal (magnet field zone 8: Germany, magnetic field zone 9: Portugal). The customer will only notice a deviation after approximately 22.5° (1 segment for the changeover).
