SUBJECT
Boot Lid Switch Fails Due to Water Intrusion

MODEL
R57 (Cooper Convertible, Cooper S Convertible)

For vehicles produced to April 2, 2011

SITUATION
The boot lid may open while driving and/or the boot lid micro-switch is not functioning properly and the boot lid cannot be locked or unlocked.

CAUSE
There is excessive water in the boot lid due to a clogged rubber drain, resulting in corrosion of the electrical connections of the boot micro-switch.

PROCEDURE
Confirm the functionality of the boot switch. If the switch does not activate the lock actuator, the switch must be replaced.

1. Check for water inside the boot lid by looking at the drain. The yellow arrow shows the location of the boot lid drain with cover plug.

If a drain cover plug is installed, remove by pulling it outward. Discard the drain cover plug.

Allow any remaining water to drain before replacing the boot switch.

Use Repair Instruction 51 49 100, and replace the defective boot switch. Quality check for proper boot lid opening, closing and locking.

2. Information only:

As of April 3, 2011 production, the rubber drain cover is no longer being installed.
