Disassembly

DIFFERENTIAL CASE ASSEMBLY

Fig. 23 Exploded view of conventional differential.:

Fig. 24 Exploded view of front differential.:

Exc. Limited Slip

1. On rear differential remove lock plate, then the side bearing nuts using tool MB990201 or equivalent.
2. On all differentials remove the carrier cap (bearing cap), Figs. 23 and 24.
3. Remove differential case assembly using the wooden handle of two hammers to avoid damaging the gears.
4. Using puller MB990810 and adapter MB9990811 or equivalent, remove side bearings. Keep side bearings and side bearing nuts, or adjusting spacers together for assembly reference.
5. Scribe alignment mark on differential case and drive gear, then remove drive gear attaching bolts and the drive gear. Loosen bolts alternately in a diagonal pattern.
6. Remove lock pin with a suitable punch, then remove pinion shaft, pinion gears, side gears and side gear thrust spacers. Keep left and right side components separate for identification during reassembly.

Limited Slip

1. Remove case from gear carrier, Fig. 25, as described under conventional differential.

Fig. 26 Differential side bearing removal:

2. Remove side bearing using tool Nos. MB990339-01, MIT303173, and MB990811-01, Fig. 26, ensuring to keep adjusting spacers separate to facilitate reassembly.
3. Mark relative position between differential case and drive gear, then loosen and remove drive gear mounting bolts in a diagonal sequence.
4. Evenly loosen differential case A and B attaching bolts, then separate the two halves and remove components from case B. Separate right and left thrust washers, spring plates, spring discs, friction plates and friction discs to facilitate assembly.

DRIVE PINION

1. Hold end yoke with tool MB990850 on rear differentials or MB990767 on front differentials and remove mounting nut and the end yoke.
2. Scribe alignment mark on end yoke and drive pinion, then tap or drive out the drive pinion with height adjusting shim, rear bearing inner race, spacer and preload adjusting shim still installed on shaft.
3. Using tools MB990339 and MB990648, remove drive pinion rear bearing inner race and height adjusting shim from shaft.
4. Remove pinion front and rear bearing outer races. When removing front outer race, remove and discard oil seal and remove the front bearing inner race.
