1986 CALIFORNIA 2.6L TRUCK AND

MONTERO EMISSION RECALL


PURPOSE

This bulletin provides a detailed procedure for inspection and repair of the emission control system on certain 1986 2.6L California Gasoline Emission Specification Truck and Montero models. A letter has been sent to all owners of the affected vehicles instructing them to return their vehicles to their Mitsubishi Motors dealer to have the engine serviced.

Information regarding this recall is also available on video tape. Technicians and service managers are strongly urged to review the video program in addition to this bulletin.

Please note that the customer is not to be charged for the repairs covered by this bulletin. To achieve the desired results, the procedure MUST be followed EXACTLY as described in this bulletin. In addition, servicing technicians must complete, sign, and attach the emission checklist (which is contained in the emission kit) to the repair order.


IMPORTANT NOTICE

All dealerships MUST perform all steps as described in this bulletin including checking for previous recall completion. This recall is different from EMR-90-008 (which was for the same model). Incomplete repairs will lead to emissions non-compliance and obvious customer dissatisfaction. The California Air Resources Board ("CARB") may survey the results of this campaign several months after starting. If incomplete repairs or non-compliance is found, another recall could be ordered or other action undertaken by CARB. In addition, California residents who own an affected vehicle, may be required to send in a Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction form to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as evidence of recall completion when they apply for vehicle registration renewal. Each customer MUST be given a completed Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction form after the recall has been completed.


AFFECTED VEHICLES

This procedure applies to 1986 California 2.6L Gasoline Emission Specification Truck and Montero models equipped with automatic or manual transmissions without limitation as to mileage. It does not apply to any other models.
