Exhaust Manifold Inspection

1. Remove air cleaner assembly.

2. Disconnect air control valve hoses.

3. Remove air control valve from heat tube and exhaust manifold

4. Remove heat tube from exhaust manifold.

NOTE: Penetrating oil may be necessary to loosen heat tube threads from the exhaust manifold.

5. Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.

6. Remove the upper heat protector (Figure 6).

7. Visually inspect the back side of the heat protector for signs of gas leakage like black sooty carbon deposits.

8. Remove the 2 upper bolts securing the lower heat protector. Using a combination wrench loosen the remaining lower bolt. Using a flashlight visually inspect the lower heat protector for black sooty deposits.

9. If you see any sign of gas leakage from the exhaust manifold (black sooty carbon deposit), replace the exhaust manifold as described in the service manual.

NOTE: It is not necessary to replace the exhaust manifold even though the manifold has cracks d there is no sign of exhaust gas leakage on the back side of the heat protector.


10. Reverse the order of removal to reinstall the heat protectors.

NOTE: Lightly coat the heat tube to exhaust manffold threads with anti-seize compound.
