Removal and Replacement
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove wheel.
3. Remove caliper assembly without disconnecting brake hose and support caliper out of way so as not to strain brake hose.
4. Remove freewheeling hub cover assembly and remove snap ring from driveshaft.
5. Remove knuckle and front hub assembly as an assembly.
6. Pull left driveshaft out of differential carrier assembly without damaging oil seal.
7. Using suitable jack, raise lower arm.
8. Remove upper mounting nuts from right shock absorber, then remove shock absorber from arm post of side frame. Do not lower jack while disconnecting shock absorber or while it is disconnected. Do not remove jack until upper part of shock absorber has been reconnected to arm post of side frame.
9. Detach right driveshaft from inner shaft assembly and remove right driveshaft.
10. Using tools MB990211 and MB990906 or equivalents, pull inner shaft out of differential carrier without damaging oil seal.
11. Using screwdriver, remove dust seal from housing tube assembly.
12. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque upper knuckle to ball joint bolts to 44-65 ft. lbs., lower knuckle at ball joints to 87-130 ft. lbs., and freewheeling hub assembly bolts to 8-10 ft. lbs.
b. Apply suitable grease to lip of dust seal and, using tools MB990938 and MB990985 or equivalents, drive dust seal into housing tube end.
c. Using tools MB990211 and MB990906 or equivalents, drive inner shaft assembly into differential carrier assembly without damaging oil seal.
d. Replace circlip which is attached to Birfield joint (BJ) side spline with new one.
e. Install right driveshaft to inner shaft assembly and torque bolts to 37-43 ft. lbs.
f. Attach shock absorber to arm post of side frame by installing double nuts. Install first nut so that distance between base of nut and end of strut is .81 inch, then torque second nut to 9-13 ft. lbs.
g. Using plastic mallet, drive left driveshaft into differential carrier assembly without damaging oil seal.
h. Replace circlip which is attached to BJ side spline with new one.
i. Mount knuckle and front hub assembly, then adjust driveshaft axial play as necessary.
