Fig. 3 Selector lever rod adjusting cam adjustment:

Gearshift Linkage, Adjust

Rod adjusting cam at top of selector lever assembly should be adjusted so that end of push button and surface A, Fig. 3, of rod adjusting cam are flush. Clearance between top of selector lever and lower surface of cam should be .44-.49 inch.

Fig. 4 Throttle rod adjustment:

Throttle Linkage, Adjust

1. Install each linkage. Loosen bolts so that rods B and C, Fig. 4, can slide properly.
2. Start and run engine until normal operating temperature is reached. Make sure fast idle is completely released by checking that cam surface of choke lever of carburetor is off throttle lever cam follower.
3. Lightly push lever A or throttle lever toward idle stopper and set rods to the idle position. Tighten bolt securely to connect rods B and C.
4. Make sure that when carburetor throttle valve is wide open, the transmission throttle lever moves smoothly from idle to wide open position and that there is some range in the lever stroke.

Fig. 5 Kickdown band adjustment:

Kickdown Band, Adjust

The kickdown band adjusting screw is located on the left side of the transmission case, Fig. 5.
1. Loosen locknut, then back off adjusting screw approximately 5 turns.
2. Torque band adjusting screw to 5.8 ft. lbs. (true torque) when not using special service tools. Torque adjusting screw to 4.3 ft. lbs. when using following special service tools: wrench C-3380-A and adapter C-3705 or equivalent for pickup models; wrench MD998357 for Montero models.
3. Back off adjusting screw 3-1/2 turns, then, while holding adjusting screw in this position, torque locknut to 30-41 ft. lbs.

Low-Reverse Band, Adjust

1. Raise and support front of vehicle, then drain transmission fluid and remove transmission oil pan.

Fig. 6 Low-reverse band adjustment:

2. Remove locknut, then tighten adjusting screw to 3.6 ft. lbs., Fig. 6.
3. Back off adjusting screw 7 turns, then, while holding adjusting screw in this position, install locknut and torque to 25-35 ft. lbs.
4. Install oil pan and gasket. Torque oil pan attaching bolts to 11-14 ft. lbs.
5. Add transmission fluid as described under ``Changing Fluid.''

Fig. 16 Adjusting throttle cable. AW-372 & KM-148 models:

Throttle Control Cable, Adjust

1. Check engine idle speed and adjust as necessary.
2. Ensure carburetor throttle lever and throttle cable bracket are not bent or deformed.
3. Measure distance between inner cable stopper and cover end, Fig. 16, with carburetor throttle valve fully open. Distance should measure 2.047-2.086 inches.
4. Adjust inner cable bracket upward or downward as necessary until measurement is within specifications.

Fig. 14 Adjusting inhibitor switch. MR600 models:

Inhibitor Switch

1. Place manual lever in Neutral position (vertical), then remove screw as shown, Fig. 14.
2. Loosen attaching bolts, then insert a .079 inch diameter pin into screw bore.
3. Move switch assembly until pin can be inserted into rotor, then torque attaching bolts to 3.6 to 5.1 ft. lbs.
4. Insert and tighten screw, Fig. 14.

Kickdown Switch

1. Loosen locknut, then extend switch until accelerator pedal lever makes contact with switch and clicks. Do not allow switch to make contact too soon or transmission will downshift on part throttle.
