NO. STB-87-03-002

DATE March, 1987

MODEL 1986 Montero, Truck
PURPOSE

This bulletin gives the corrective action to take if the 4WD indicator light in a Montero or Truck does not go out in cold weather when 2WD is selected.

DESCRIPTION

If the vehicle is parked in extremely cold weather in four-wheel drive, the 4WD indicator light may stay "ON", even after shifting into 2WD, indicating that the front hubs are still locked. This condition is caused by the viscosity of the lubricants in the powertrain and can be corrected easity by the driver. Two options are recommended:

After operating the vehicle in in 4WD, shift into 2WD before leaving the vehicle parked in sub-freezing temperatures for an extended period, or

If the vehicle has become cold-soaked while in 4WD, shift into 2WD and back up about 5-10 feet. If the indicator light remains "ON", then drive in 4WD about ten minutes or long enough to warm up the lubricant in the power train, then shift to 2WD so that the indicator light goes off.
