SUBJECT:
TIMING BELT COVER AND CAMSHAFT SPROCKET CHANGE - 1987 CORDIA/TREDIA AND GALANT
NO. STB-87-09-002 REISSUE

DATE May, 1987

MODEL 1987 Galant, Cordia/Tredia
STB Revision STB-87-09-002

NOTE: THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES STB-87-09-002 DATED MARCH, 1987 WHICH CONTAINED AN ERROR IN PART DESCRIPTION. PLEASE DISCARD THE PREVIOUS ISSUE.

PURPOSE This bulletin provides information on a design change for the camshaft sprockets and timing belt covers on the 1.8L G62B and 2.0L G638 Cordia/Tredia engines and the 2.4L G64B Galant engine. This change is made to make it easier to adjust the timing belt tension properly, and the procedure for making the adjustment has been simplified for these newer models built after October, 1986.

The new adjusting procedure differs from the procedure in the 1987 Service Manuals. Therefore, as reference to this bulletin, please write the STB number in the revision boxes on the following pages:

1987 Galant Service Manual Page 9-17
1987 Cordia/Tredia Service Manual Page 9-14

EFFECTIVE DATES All changes became effective in production in October, 1986. The effective engine numbers are tabulated below:

PART NUMBERS AND INTERCHANGEABILITY
INTERCHANGEABIUTY Sprockets and timing belt covers must be changed together - the "new" sprocket with the "new" cover, the "old" sprocket with the "old" cover. Don't use a new sprocket with an old cover, and don't use an old sprocket with a new cover.

DETAILS OF CHANGES

1. Timing Mark Added to Camshaft Sprocket:

A second timing mark is added to the camshaft sprocket. It is located so that you see can easily through the new window in the timing belt cover when adjusting the belt tension.

The mark is located as shown in Fig. 1.

2. Inspection Window and Cover Added to Timing Belt Cover:

An inspection window and access cover have been added to the Timing Belt Upper Front Cover.

The location of the new window is shown in Fig. 2.

PROCEDURE FOR ADJUSTING TIMING BELT TENSION

The following procedure is recommended for ;fadjusting the timing belt tension on models built after October, 1986 equipped with the new camshaft sprocket and timing belt upper front cover.

1. Remove the access cover from the inspection window.

2. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until #1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. Fig. 3.

CAUTION: Once the marks are aligned, do not turn the crankshaft counterclockwise. To do so would cause improper belt tension!

FIGURE 4:

3. Turn the crankshaft clockwise two sprocket teeth. Fig. 4.

NOTE: This is done to position the camshaft just past TDC, gathering slack on the timing belt on the tensioner side.

CAUTION: Be sure not to turn the crankshaft counterclockwise. This would cause tension on the tensioner side of the belt, resulting in improper belt tension.

4. Remove the two access covers from the timing belt lower cover. Pry them off as shown in Fig. 5.

FIGURE 6:

5. Insert a 14 mm socket through the access hole to loosen the nut and bolt which retain the timing belt tensioner. Fig. 6. This allows the spring to tension the belt property.

CAUTION: Loosen the timing belt tensioner fasteners only 1/2-2/3 turn to prevent their falling down inside the cover.

6. Now tighten the timing belt tensioner fasteners
- first the BOLT (lower) and the NUT (upper).

7. Install the access covers. Note that there are projections molded into the cover which serve as guides for locating the cover. Fig. 7.
