Procedures
INSPECTION- Check the camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and tensioner, for abnormal wear, cracks or damage. Replace if necessary.
- Check tensioner for easy and smooth pulley rotation. Also check for play or noise. Replace if necessary.
- When the engine is overhauled or belt tension adjusted, check the belt closely.
- Check the belt for oil or dust deposits. Replace if necessary. Do not clean the belt with a solvent.
- Check the belt in detail. If the following is evident, replace belt with a new one.
(1) Hardened back surface rubber, back surface glossy, non-elastic and so hard that no mark is produced when a finger nail is forced into it.
(2) Cracked back surface rubber
(3) Cracked or separated canvas
(4) Cracked tooth bottom
(5) Cracked side of belt
(6) Badly worn side of belt
NOTE: A normal belt should have clear-cut sides as if cut with a sharp knife.
(7) Badly worn teeth
Initial stage: Canvas on load side tooth flank worn (fluffy canvas fibers, rubber gone and color changed to white, unclear canvas texture)
Last stage: Canvas on load side flank worn down and rubber exposed (tooth width reduced)
(8) Missing tooth
- Replace the timing belt tensioner if the pulley is damaged or turns irregularly.
- Replace the timing belt tensioner if there is grease leakage from the seal.
