Transmission Fluid Level Check

1. Operate vehicle until transaxle fluid temperature reaches 160-180°F.
2. With vehicle on a level surface, move selector lever through every position.
3. Place selector in ``N'' position.
4. Clean dirt from dipstick area, then remove dipstick and check fluid condition. The transaxle should be overhauled under the following conditions:
a. If there is a ``burning'' odor.
b. If fluid color has become noticeably blacker.
c. If there is a noticeably great amount of metal particles in fluid.
5. Ensure fluid is at ``HOT'' level on dipstick. If fluid level is low, add ATF until level reaches ``HOT'' range.
Low fluid level can cause a verity of conditions because it allows the pump to induce air into the system. Air trapped in hydraulic circuits forms bubbles which makes fluid spongy, therefore, pressures will be erratic. Air bubbles can cause overheating, fluid oxidation which can interfere with normal valve, clutch and servo operation. Foaming can also result in fluid escaping from transaxle vent where it may be mistaken for a leak. Ensure to examine fluid on dipstick closely.
