TIMING BELT INSTALLATION

Use the procedures shown in the 1992-93 Eclipse Service Manual beginning on Page 11G6-32. The procedures shown in the 1992-93 Engine Overhaul Manual beginning on Page 11C-24 can also be used.

AUTO TENSIONER INFORMATION

When replacing the timing belt, the auto tensioner must be removed from the engine, inspected, and reset before belt reinstallation. These steps are necessary to properly pre-adjust the timing belt's tension. Whenever the timing belt is removed, the tensioner extends to its outermost travel and must be reset.

DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY REPLACE THE TENSIONER!

Auto tensioner replacement is not necessary unless the unit fails inspection. Use the tensioner inspection procedures shown in the 1992-93 Eclipse Service Manual beginning on Page 11G6-28 or the procedures shown in the 1992-93 Engine Overhaul Manual beginning on Page 11C-39. If a tensioner is found to be faulty, replace it, and save the old part. Normal parts retention procedures apply.

Caution:
When resetting the tensioner, care must be used to avoid damaging the plug on the tensioner. Place a plain washer over the plug to prevent direct contact with the vise's "soft" jaws.
