Multi-use Tester, Installed:

PURPOSE
The Multi-Use Tester is a diagnostic read-out box designed by Mitsubishi to gain access to the on-board diagnostics that are found on Mitsubishi-built cars and trucks.

- The Multi-Use Tester reads the system performance information that is stored in the vehicle system controllers.
- The Multi-Use Tester displays the fault messages that have been stored in the various system controller memories.
- The Multi-Use Tester allows the Technician to run tests of computer-controlled vehicle systems.
- The Multi-Use Tester, along with the test instructions in these sections, leads the Technician through the diagnostic procedures.

Note: There are diagnostic read-out boxes available from other manufacturers that can be used on Mitsubishi vehicles. However, the diagnostic test procedures included in these sections were designed specifically for use with Mitsubishi's Multi-Use Tester diagnostic read-out box. It is assumed that the Multi-Use Tester will be used to perform the procedures in these sections.

OPERATION
The Multi-Use Tester operates by communicating with the controller for the vehicle system being tested.

To perform the diagnostic tests, a program cartridge must be inserted into the Multi-Use Tester. This cartridge serves a similar purpose for the Multi-Use Tester as a diskette does for a personal computer. It contains the diagnostic test program. It must be inserted into the Multi-Use Tester in order to perform the tests in these sections. The power supply cable is attached to the positive terminal of the battery, or the cigarette lighter.
