Deployment Inside the Vehicle

Before scrapping a vehicle equipped with an air bag system, or prior to disposing of an air bag module, the module must be deployed. If vehicle is to be scrapped, deploy air bags inside vehicle. If vehicle is to continue in service, air bags must be removed and deployed outside vehicle.
1. Open windows and doors of vehicle.
2. Disconnect and remove battery from vehicle. Wait at least 60 seconds after disconnection before performing any further steps. SRS is designed to retain enough deployment voltage for a short time even after battery has been disconnected.
3. Remove lower steering column cover.
4. Disconnect clockspring red two-pin connector from body wiring connector.
5. Remove glove compartment and outer case, then disconnect passengers air bag module red two-pin connector from body wiring harness.
6. Connect two 20 ft. long wires to the two leads of SRS air bag adapter harness "A" tool No. MB686560, or equivalent. Cover connections with tape. Other ends of two wires should be connected to each other to prevent unwanted deployment.
7. Connect adapter harness "A" to clockspring connector.
8. Connect harness "A" to passenger red two-pin connector and pass deployment wires out of vehicle.
9. From as far away as possible, in a shielded position, disconnect the two wires from each other. Read following cautions before proceeding:
a. Ensure no people, animals, equipment or objects are in or near vehicle before deploying air bag in this manner. Wear safety glasses and protective gloves.
b. Connect the two wires to a fully charged 12 volt battery. Deployment should occur.
c. Inflator will be quite hot immediately after deployment. Wait 30 minutes to allow air bag to cool.
d. Do not inhale gas from air bag.
e. Dispose of air bag as outlined under "Deployed Air Bag Module Disposal".
