Removal

1. Bleed fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain cooling system.

3. Refer to images for removal procedures.
4. Remove the air intake hose (1).
5. Disconnect the accelerator cable (2) or throttle cable.
6. Disconnect the high pressure fuel hose (3).

Caution: Cover the hose connection with rags to prevent fuel splashes that could be caused by some residual pressure in the fuel line.

7. Remove and discard the old O-ring (4) from the fuel line.

8. Place mating marks on the upper radiator hose and hose clamp, then disconnect the radiator hose (5).
9. Disconnect the water by-pass hose (6).
10. Disconnect the heater hose (7). and the brake booster vacuum hose (8).
11. Disconnect the fuel return hose (9), the vacuum hose (10), and the PCV hose (11).
12. Disconnect the spark plug wires (12), the oxygen sensor (13), and the engine coolant temperature gauge unit (14).
13. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature sensor (15), the the ISC (16), the fuel injectors (17), and, on CAL vehicles only, the EGR temperature sensor (18).
14. Disconnect the ignition power transistor (19), the condenser (20), the TPS (21), and the ISC motor position sensor (22).
15. Disconnect the distributor (23), the crank position sensor (24), the ground cable (25), and the wiring harness (26).
16. Remove the clamp (27) for the P/S pressure hose and the A/C pressure hose.

17. Place a wooden block between the jack and the engine oil pan and jack up the engine as shown.

Caution: Jack the engine up carefully so as not to apply excessive pressure to the various parts.

18. Remove the engine mount bracket (28).

19. Remove the valve cover (29), the semi-circular packing (30), and the upper timing belt cover (31).

20. Rotate the crankshaft to align the cam timing marks as shown.

21. Remove the cam sprocket (32), with the timing belt attached, and carefully place it on the lower timing belt cover.

Caution: After removing the cam sprocket, do NOT rotate the crankshaft.

22. Remove the self locking nuts (33) and gasket (34) from the exhaust manifold.

23. Using SST MD998051-01 or equivalent, remove the head bolts in the sequence shown and then remove the cylinder head assembly.
