Lighting - Headlamp Moisture Information

No: TSB-10-54-006

SUBJECT:

MOISTURE IN HEADLAMPS

This TSB supercedes TSB-06-54-008, issued October, 2006 to add photos showing conditions that do not require headlamp replacement. Revised information is italicized and indicated by < (shaded arrow).

PURPOSE

Some moisture in a vented headlamp is normal. As the air temperature inside the headlamp cools moisture from the outside air can be pulled in through the vent. This normal moisture will appear as fogging or condensation on the inside of the lamp lens. The lamps are designed so that airflow sweeps away the moisture as the lamp warms up.

Headlamp moisture may also vary from side to side depending on the cool down rate and air flow. This variation does not indicate that one lamp is leaking and the other one is not.

PROCEDURE < (shaded arrow)

1. Moisture can be cleared by turning on the main headlamps for thirty minutes or less. Parking the vehicle facing the sun will also clear the moisture.

The photos show examples of headlights that should NOT be replaced for leaking. Use these photos as a guideline when determining headlamp replacement.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Customers should be advised of the above information. Replacing the headlamp assembly is not required unless the water is pooling on the bottom. All headlamps replaced under warranty must be returned for leak confirmation by the manufacturer.

Note:
Claims for unnecessary headlamp replacement will be charged back.
