CAUTION: Be sure to apply the parking brake and block wheels before performing idle check or adjustment or any engine running test.Adjustment Conditions
- Engine coolant temperature 85 - 95°C (185 - 205°F).
- Lights, electric cooling fan, and all electrical accessories off.
- Transmission in neutral or park.
- Steering wheel in the neutral position.
Ignition Timing Adjustment Connector Hook-up:
1. Insert a paper clip into the idle speed diagnostic connector
Connecting A Tachometer:
2. Connect a tachometer to the inserted clip.
3. Connect a timing light.
4. Ground the ignition timing adjustment terminal with a jumper lead.
5. Start the engine and allow it to run at curb idle speed.
Ignition Timing Inspection:
6. Aim the timing light at the crankshaft pulley and verify basic ignition timing.
Basic Ignition Timing: 5° BTDC ± 2°
7. If necessary loosen the distributor mounting nut and adjust timing by rotating the distributor.
8. Stop the engine and disconnect the grounding jumper.
9. Start the engine and allow it to operate at curb idle speed.
10. Verify that actual ignition timing. Actual ignition timing may vary slightly under the direction of the engine control module. If necessary re-check basic ignition timing. If it is still correct no further action is required.
Actual Ignition Timing: 8° BTDC
