Multi-Use Tester (MUT)

Multi-use Tester, Installed:

PURPOSE
The Mitsubishi multi-use tester is a scan tool or diagnostic read-out box designed to gain access to the on-board diagnostic system.
1. Reads the system performance information that is stored in the vehicle system controllers.
2. Displays the fault messages that have been stored in the various system controller memories.
3. Allows the technician to run tests of computer-controlled vehicle systems.
4. Used with the test instructions in these sections, leads the technician through the diagnostic procedures.

NOTE: There are scan tools available from other manufacturers that can be used, however the diagnostic test procedures included in these sections were designed specifically for use with the multi-use tester diagnostic read-out box. it is assumed that the multi-use tester will be used to perform the procedures in these sections. If using another scan tool follow the manufacturer's instructions.

OPERATION
The multi-use tester operates by communicating with the controller for the vehicle system being tested.

To perform the diagnostic tests, a program cartridge must be inserted into the multi-use tester. this cartridge serves a similar purpose for the multi-use tester as a diskette does for a personal computer. It contains the diagnostic test program. It must be inserted into the multi-use tester in order to perform the tests in these sections. the power supply cable is attached to the positive terminal of the battery, or the cigarette lighter.
