NO: SR-98-006DATE: November, 1998
MODEL: 1994-95 Galant
SUBJECT:
STOP LIGHT MALFUNCTION - SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN
PURPOSE
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. is recalling certain 1994-95 Galant vehicles for possible stop light malfunction due to the stop light switch contact points becoming overheated. Dealers are requested to install a relay to prevent the switch from overheating and to replace the stop light switch, since internal deterioration cannot be determined.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1994-95 Galant models equipped with anti-lock brakes (ABS)
IMPORTANT:
Do not assume that all vehicles in the production range are eligible for this campaign procedure. Check on the Warranty Superscreen to verify the vehicle is an affected VIN for this campaign and that this campaign procedure has not already been completed.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
A letter has been sent to all owners of affected vehicles telling them to bring their vehicle to their Mitsubishi Motors dealer to have a new brake stop light switch installed according to the procedures outlined in this Safety Recall Bulletin. A copy of the customer notification letter appears in this bulletin.
BACKGROUND
The contact points in the stop light switch may become overheated, causing the stop lights to fail to come on when the brake pedal is depressed. To correct this condition, a relay must be installed in the stop light circuit and a new stop light switch must be installed. The relay will prevent the new switch from becoming overheated. A subharness must also be installed. The materials needed for this recall are contained in a "Stroke Sensor Repair Kit" (listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin).
Customers are instructed to bring their vehicle to their Mitsubishi dealer for stop light repairs.
REQUIRED OPERATIONS
Before starting the PROCEDURE section of this bulletin, CHECK ON THE WARRANTY SUPERSCREEN to verify that the vehicle is an affected VIN for this campaign and that this campaign procedure has not already been completed.
1. Remove the hood release lever, instrument panel under cover, and foot (air) duct.
2. Disconnect the two body harness connectors (a 3-pin connector and a 4-pin connector) at the stop light switch. Then remove the old switch.
3. Install the new stop light switch provided in the repair kit. Position the harness connector on the switch to face downward.
4. Adjust the stop light switch housing in order to achieve 1.0 mm plus or minus 0.5 mm clearance between the switch and the brake pedal stopper.
5. The repair kit contains a relay and a subharness. The new stop light circuit after installing the repair kit is shown below, with the new subharness indicated by the dark lines.
6. Connect the subharness 4-pin connector (on the ground terminal side) to the new relay.
7. Using the bolt and flange nut provided in the repair kit, install the new relay and subharness ground terminal to the lower steering bracket. Install the bolt from inside the steering bracket (bolt head inside the bracket and bolt threads outside the bracket).
8. Confirm the ground wire is properly grounded as follows:
a. Measure the resistance between the subharness ground terminal and the negative battery terminal (B-). Resistance should be 0.5 ohms or less.
b. If resistance is more than 0.5 ohms, ensure the ground bolt is tight and making good contact with the steering column bracket. If necessary, clean or lightly sand the bolt contact area.
9. Route the subharness over the brake pedal return spring.
10. Connect the male subharness connector to the new brake switch. Connect the female subharness connector to the body harness.
11. Reconnect the 3-pin connector to the new stop light switch.
12. Use the tie wrap provided in the repair kit to secure the subharness connector to the main body harness. Trim the excess tie wrap ends.
13. Depress the brake pedal and confirm that the stop lights come on.
14. Reinstall the foot duct, instrument panel undercover, and hood release lever.
