Inspection Procedure 1

COMMENT
If the engine does not start when the selector lever is in "P" or "N" position, the cause is probably a malfunction of Park/Neutral position switch system, transmission control cable assembly, engine system, torque converter or oil pump.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
The most likely causes for this case:
- Malfunction of the Park/Neutral position switch
- Malfunction of the transmission control cable assembly
- Malfunction of the engine system
- Malfunction of the torque converter
- Malfunction of the oil pump

DIAGNOSIS





Required Special Tool: MB991502: Scan Tool (MUT-II)

CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool MB9911502, make sure the ignition switch is "OFF" before connecting or disconnecting the scan tool MB991502.

STEP 1. Is A/T diagnostic trouble code numbers "27" or "28" displayed?
If yes, refer to Code number 27 or 28 - Park/neutral position switch system. DTC 27
If no, go to Step 2.

STEP 2. Check the transmission control cable assembly.





Move the selector lever to each position, and check if the manual control lever position of the Park/Neutral position switch corresponds to the selector lever position.
If the manual control lever position is correct, go to Step 3.
If the manual control lever position is not correct, repair the transmission control cable. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch and Control Cable Adjustment. Confirm that the malfunction symptom is eliminated.

STEP 3. Check the engine.
Refer to Diagnosis - Inspection about "Starting."
If the inspection result is not good, repair or replace the appropriate engine components.
If the inspection result is good, go to Step 4.

STEP 4. Check the torque converter.





Remove the transmission.
Check the torque converter for installation condition (whether installed slantwise or not), its spline or its teeth for damage.
If the torque converter is good, go to Step 5.
If the torque converter is not good, repair or replace it.

STEP 5. Replace the oil pump.





Replace the oil pump (Oil pump cannot be repaired). Refer to Transmission. Confirm that the malfunction symptom is eliminated.
If the symptom is eliminated, diagnosis is complete.
