Keyless Entry Transmitter: Testing and Inspection
This article reflects the changes called out by TSB 04-42a-006HOW TO REGISTER SECRET CODE
Each individual secret code is registered inside the transmitter, and so it is necessary to resister these codes with the EEPROM inside the receiver in the following cases.
- When the transmitter or ETACS-ECU is replaced
- If more transmitters are to be used
- If it appears that a problem is occurring because of faulty registration of a code.
A maximum of four different codes can be stored in the EEPROM memory (four different transmitters can be used). When the code for the first transmitter is registered, the previously registered codes for all transmitters are cleared. Therefore, if you are using four transmitters or are adding more transmitters, the codes for all transmitters must be registered at the same time.
1. Check that the doors lock normally when the key is used.
2. Insert the ignition key.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool MB991502, always turn the ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool MB991502.
3. Connect the scan tool MB991502 to the data link connector. If the scan tool is not used, ground terminal 1. of the data link connector.
NOTE: This will connect terminal 1. of the data link connector to ground, and the system will be in secret code registration standby mode.
4. Press the hazard switch six times within 10 seconds.
NOTE: Once the process is completed six times, then it will operate with all doors and tailgate lock and unlock operations once and then go to the save mode.
NOTE: The hazard warning light switch is turned on and off alternately whenever it is pushed.
5. Press the transmitter switch, and then press it two times within 10 seconds of the first press. This will register the code.
6. Once the program is saved, it will operate once with the all doors and tailgate lock and unlock operations.
7. If you are using two or more transmitters or have added a second transmitter, the same registration procedure should be carried out within one minute after registering the code for the first transmitter.
8. Registration mode will be canceled under the following conditions:
- When the secret code for four transmitters has been registered;
- When one minute has passed after registration mode started;
- When scan tool MB991502 is disconnected (the ground connection is broken);
- When the key is removed from the key cylinder;
9. After the registration is completed, remove the ignition key and close all the doors, and then check that the keyless entry system operates normally.
WHEN VEHICLES COMMUNICATION INTERFACE (V.C.I.) MB991824 IS USED
1. Insert the ignition key into the key cylinder and check that the doors have been locked normally when the ignition key is turned.
2. Insert the ignition key into the key cylinder.
CAUTION: Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position and then connect vehicle communication interface (V.C.I.) MB991824 to the data link connector.
3. Connect vehicle communication interface (V.C.I.) MB991824 to the data link connector.
4. Press the hazard warning light switch six times within 10 seconds.
NOTE:
- At this time the code registration monitor request is sent and becomes registration mode (all doors locked and then all doors unlocked).
- The hazard warning light switch is turned ON and OFF alternately whenever the hazard warning light switch is pushed.
5. Press the transmitter button, and then press it two times within 10 seconds of the first press. This will register the code.
6. When registration is completed, the code registration monitor request is sent (all doors locked and unlocked).
7. If you are using two or more transmitters or have added a second transmitter, the next registration procedure should be registered within one minute after registering the code for the previous transmitter. The registration procedure is common for all the transmitters.
8. Registration mode will be canceled under the following conditions:
- When the secret code for four transmitters has been registered;
- When one minute has passed after finishing the registration of all transmitters;
- When vehicle communication interface (V.C.I.) MB991824 is disconnected from the data link connector;
- When the ignition key is removed from the ignition key cylinder;
9. After the registration is completed, carry out the following work.
CAUTION: Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position and then disconnect vehicle communication interface (V.C.I.) MB991824 from the data link connector.
10. Disconnect vehicle communication interface (V.C.I.) MB991824 from the data link connector.
11. Remove the ignition key from ignition key cylinder.
12. Close all of the doors.
13. Verify the keyless entry system operates normally.
When Scan Tool MB991582 and Vehicle Communications Interface (V.C.I) MB991824 is not used.
1. Check that the doors lock normally when the key is used.
2. Insert the key
CAUTION: Before connecting or disconnecting data link connector terminal 1 from body ground, turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK (OFF) position.
3. Use special tool MB991529 to ground data link connector terminal 1.
NOTE: The ESTACS-ECU will be ready to register the encrypted code by grounding data link connector terminal 1.
4. Press the hazard waning light switch six times within 10 seconds.
Note:When the hazard warning light switch has been pressed six times, the ETACS-ECU is ready to register and encrypted code.
Note:The hazard warning light switch is a toggle switch.
5. Press the transmitter button, and then press it two times within 10 seconds of the first press. This will resister the code.
6. When the encrypted code has been registered, the ETACS-ECU locks and unlocks the doors automatically once.
7. If you are using two or more transmitters or have added a second transmitter, the next transmitter should be registered within one minute after registering the code for the previous transmitter. The registration procedure is common for all the transmitters.
Note:If the test light does not illuminate, the transmitter encrypted code has not been registered yet. Register the encrypted code again.
Note:If the code registration is difficult, refer to Information Bus.
8. Registration mode will be canceled under the following conditions:
- When the secret code for four transmitters has been registered;
- When one minute has passed after finishing the registration of all transmitters;
- When no secret codes have been registered for more than one minute after the registration mode is entered;
- When vehicle communication interface (V.C.I.) MB991824 is disconnected from the data link connector;
- When the ignition key is removed from the ignition key cylinder;
